Lessons from and for going back to the office

At Design Cayman, as part of Cayman opening back up, we began going back to our own office on June 1st. Even before then, we have been supporting clients preparing for their own return with our Covid-19 Visual Reports, and now we have had the opportunity to practice and learn from this experience for ourselves.

Today sharing some key points that we have observed and are continuing to bring awareness so we can both learn for ourselves and share with clients and others:

  1. We have adapted quickly, almost without thinking, to changing our work habits. We have simply adopted and adapted, “done”.
  2. We are finding washing hands and cleaning surfaces is our number one focus, combined with a mask and face shield if we are called to any face to face meeting.
  3. We feel even more connected. Our meetings seem shorter, yet we feel we are achieving results and appear more effective. Why? We will be exploring this.
  4. We are adapting and finding balance. During lockdown, our team worked seamlessly. Now, each team member may need a different balance between work and home. Focus on your people and, as far as possible, make it so that whether or not they are in the office or at home, the only difference from them not physically being in office is that the light in their office is off, not on.

In addition to our knowledge and research globally as architects, we are also always learning and applying lessons for ourselves, learning and iterating, bringing new ways to adapt to our own work and to support clients. Out of this has come our Covid-19 Visual Report product.

These reports provide visual representations for client offices, looking at sequencing and movement of people along with resolving issues like toilets, boardroom and kitchens, all considering how you can maintain distancing and where to give your particular focus?

We’ve learned a lot in our first two weeks back in the office, we will certainly learn more and will share further observations in our next newsletter.
